Version 1

Version 2 - Final

Map

This is a map concept for my game Abyssal. The goal was to create a map representative of an open-world game, in which new areas could be unlocked through exploration. Players can teleport to different areas of the map through designated waypoints.

The main elements I wanted to include in my map were a balanced amount of large explorable features, and open space, natural and artificial structures, and a cohesive color palette. I ended up taking more inspiration from modern sci-fi maps than traditional paper maps.

My first finished draft had the makings of a good map, but needed drastic changes. Overall it was far too crowded, with too many decorative elements and not enough negative space to allow the eye to rest. For the second version, I drastically opened up the entire composition.

The finished version has much more negative space and fewer decorative elements. I made two versions: a close up view of this section of the map, and a larger view of the entire area, showing where other explorable places could be located. The player would be able to unlock those areas and reveal them on the map through exploration.
