Environmental concept for my video game, Abyssal. The goal was to make a mysterious environment that was both familiar and alien.

Process

This version mostly captured the vibe of the piece I wanted to create, but needed some major changes. The lens blur does not work with the large landscape format, and the background needed to be darker and murkier to convey the feeling of being underwater.

Version 1

Version 2 - Final

Abyssal is set in a post-apocalyptic alien Earth, and I wanted to reflect that unearthly vibe in my piece. The key imagery I wanted to focus on were larger-than life plants and animals, destroyed buildings, and a murky underwater atmosphere.

After feedback from my classmates, I decided to finalize Sketch #4 because it was agreed to have the strongest composition and sense of story with the large tentacles. It also had the most cohesive layout, and a balance of feeling full but not overwhelming.
